BORN TO LIVE WILD – A PLEDGE FOR WILDLIFE

Blood Lions has brought the horrors of predator breeding, canned hunting and a variety of other exploitative activities using lions and other species to the world’s attention in a way that has not been achieved before. While so many others have been involved in different ways over the last decade and more , and their contributions have been and will continue to be meaningful and significant, the films powerful visual narrative as well as the global campaign have provided a compelling call to action to have these practices stopped.

With support from the wider conservation community and the global tourism industry as well as millions of concerned citizens, the Blood Lions campaign is now owned by everyone that supports an end to the breeding, canned hunting and commercial exploitation.

For those not yet committed, we ask that you consider doing so. By committing to the pledge you will also be making a clear statement that:

a) lions and other predators are wild species and we wish to continue promoting Africa as an authentic, wild and rewarding tourism destination and,

b) we wish to continue our support and promotion of the formal conservation community in their endeavors to secure the survival of Africa’s predators in the wild.

This pledge has become a central part of what we are all trying to achieve, and this page recognizes those safari and tourism operators that have committed to actively becoming involved in being part of the solution.

Blood Lions and those that have already signed up ask that you join in good faith. The industry will be its own watchdog.

WHAT IS THE CAPE LEOPARD TRUST?

The Cape Leopard Trust, established 2004, is a Non-Government Organisation that functions as an active predator research and conservation working group, with a primary focus on leopard. The CLT uses scientific research to aid leopard and predator conservation, seeking solutions to human-wildlife conflict and inspiring greater interest in the environment through an interactive and dynamic environmental education programme.

Long term research and monitoring are vital in order to effectively manage and conserve an elusive and far-ranging top predator such as the leopard – one needs sound knowledge and understanding of its behaviour, diet and habitat requirements. Before the pioneering work undertaken by The Cape Leopard Trust, very little was known about the ecology of leopards in the Cape mountains. Studies have since shown that leopards in the Cape differ morphologically and genetically from leopards elsewhere in southern Africa, however they are not classified as a separate subspecies. Leopard home ranges in our study areas may be as much as 10 times larger than those reported in earlier research, illustrating that population numbers are far lower than previously estimated. Because of these low densities, large home ranges and limited suitable habitat, leopards in the Cape mountains may be far more threatened than many other leopard populations.

Mission: To ensure the long-term survival of leopard populations by facilitating the protection of natural landscapes and promoting peaceful coexistence, empowered by scientific research, positive community partnerships, environmental education and advocacy.

Rhino poaching continues to escalate at unprecedented levels – with 668 rhino being killed in South Africa in 2012, representing an increase of 49% on the previous year.

In the first three months of 2013, South Africa lost 203 rhinos to poaching – more than two rhinos per day. Conservationists and their agencies are now being challenged to find new ways of dealing with the scourge.

WWF South Africa (WWF-SA) recently announced a number of strategic initiatives to combat rhino poaching, including a focus on addressing the increased demand for horn in South-East Asia and in particular, Viet Nam.

Deploying the global phenomena of mobile gaming, the organisation aims to shift perceptions about the use of rhino horn via an interactive and engaging mobile game, “WWF Rhino Raid”.

WWF-SA, in partnership with Flint Sky Interactive, is poised to launch “WWF Rhino Raid” developed entirely in Cape Town. “We are proud to be developing a unique homegrown solution to address a very serious South African problem,” says Flint Sky director, Athol Moult.

Dr Morné du Plessis, CEO of WWF-SA, believes the game represents a novel approach to the challenge of effective communication around rhino issues: “The objective is not just to have fun playing the game, but to begin a process of debunking the myths around the use of rhino horn. ”

“It is becoming increasingly recognised that games can positively influence behavior change; accordingly, the game will be localised into Asian languages in target countries”, comments Dr Andrew Baxter, Head of Business Development at WWF. “Rhino Raid is set to be both an entertaining game and a source of informative facts. A daring rhino character called Rad takes up the fight against poachers in gameplay that takes Rad on an epic journey, as he chases down the poachers in an attempt to save his species.”

It’s about the most Rad-ical rhino to run across your screen – ever! WWF Rhino Raid is an exciting sidescrolling runner that tells the story of Rad the Rhino and his quest to save his species by outwitting the poachers.

In the face of the heightening scourge of rhino poaching in South Africa, Flint Sky Interactive and WWF South Africa have just completed development on a mobile game that delivers anti-poaching messaging and facts about rhinos.

The purchase of the gaming app for US$1.99 provides financial support of WWF’s rhino projects and counter poaching initiatives. Gameplay integrates messaging on facts around rhinos while debunking myths behind the consumption of rhino horn. Players also learn more about the supply chain that’s feeding the demand for rhino horn.

Designed and directed by Flint Sky’s Athol Moult, internationally renowned illustrator Kris ‘Kronk’ Hewitt and musician Markus Wormstorm also lent their considerable talents to the game’s character design and music respectively. The game’s code was written by Tasty Poison Games for both Android and Apple’s iOS platforms and will be available globally from late April on the iTunes, Google Play and Samsung App Stores.

Says Athol Moult, “This all-South African team has delivered a first-class game, one that is a fantastic mix of art, design, music and action, all the while fighting for a great cause both on and off the screen”.

The global rise of mobile gaming provides the ideal platform to reach an audience of millions. Within this audience the game has the ability to influence current and future generations of people around the world, whose exposure to the rhino poaching problem to date has been non-existent. Of particular importance is reaching the Asian markets where both mobile gaming and the rhino horn market are huge.

Efforts to fight wildlife crime received an important boost thanks to a new grant from Google. WWF-US will use the grant to adapt state-of-the-art technologies for the protection of endangered species like elephants, rhinos and tigers. These innovative new tools will give rangers in protected areas and local communities a welcome advantage against the ruthless and deadly gangs of criminals targeting wildlife. Remote aerial survey systems, wildlife tagging technology and ranger patrolling guided by analytical software like the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) will be integrated to increase the detection and deterrence of poaching in vulnerable sites in Asia and Africa. The goal is to create an efficient, effective network that can be adopted globally.

As you know, it’s a real disappointment to me that this new content is being forced out in a rush to meet Rhino Raid’s needs rather than as a joint development to equally benefit communications from WWF-SA Rhino Programme, as I originally proposed.

Governments made a clear choice at CITES to offer more protection to rhinos by agreeing on timelines that will help two of the worst offenders in the rhino horn trade, Viet Nam and Mozambique, to clean up their act. Viet Nam has been recognised as the main destination for rhino horn, where it is under new demand as a treatment for cancer and hangovers. The Vietnamese government is now required to implement a strategy to reduce demand in the country and ensure horn traffickers are prosecuted and strongly punished. Crucially for South Africa and the Kruger National Park in particular, this week’s conservation success also means that Mozambique must strengthen legislation and enforcement to reduce trade flows exiting the African continent.

Nearly 2,400 rhinos have been poached across Africa since 2006, slowing the population growth of both African rhino species to some of the lowest levels since 1995, according to the latest facts revealed by IUCN experts. Well-organized and well-funded crime syndicates are continuing to feed the growing black market with rhino horn. Over the past few years, consumer use of rhino horn has shifted from traditional Asian medicine practices to new uses, such as to convey status. High levels of consumption – especially the escalating demand in Viet Nam – threaten to soon reverse the considerable conservation gains achieved over the last two decades.
